Creative Technologist

We are seeking a project hire to join our team in Copenhagen.

1-year contract · SPACE10 HQ

What is SPACE10?

SPACE10 is a research and design lab on a mission to create a better everyday life for people and the planet — proudly supported and entirely dedicated to IKEA. We solve diverse, complex challenges with partners and collaborators across the world.

Our team is made up of 27 value-driven people with diverse skill sets from 13 countries. We have varied backgrounds, life stories, life futures, areas of expertise and personal preferences — and we celebrate that diversity. We lead with humbleness, playfulness and optimism. We like to laugh and we do it often.

What is the role?

We are searching for a Creative Technologist to lead exploration into emerging digital technologies within one of our research and design programs: Home Computing.

You will report directly to our Head of Technology, Tony Gjerlufsen.

Why is the role important?

As a Creative Technologist, you will play a key role by keeping the team at the forefront of emerging technologies as they relate to the home. This will require both lending your insights and conducting hands-on exploration.

  • You will work closely with our Home Computing team, a group of designers, strategists and producers to develop radical concepts that aim to elevate everyday life for people around the world.
  • You will assist the Home Computing program’s project teams, what we call the Everyday Experiments team, in informing, conceptualising, developing and testing digital prototypes at varying fidelities. Your input should accelerate the research & design process and quality.
  • You will keep both internal and external stakeholders regularly updated on progress. Every SPACE10 team member plays a crucial role in identifying new opportunities for their relevant field and the lab as a whole.

What we want in a Creative Technologist:

We’re looking for a technically versatile person with experience working in the creative industry at the intersection of design and technology. You have a flair for seeing and developing creative concepts with emerging technologies and are self-motivated while thriving in team settings. A strategic mindset and practical knowledge of spatial computing will benefit you greatly in this role.

Success looks like:

  • Developed a series of technical prototype explorations of varying fidelity in line with the Home Computing program projects and objectives.

  • Contributed technical direction to partners around the upcoming Everyday Experiments.

  • Established and led a technical prototyping regime that supports Everyday Experiments as well as the overall Home Computing program.

You are all about:

  • Rapidly prototyping at multiple levels – from paper and pen to high technical fidelity.
  • Quickly understanding a creative concept from seeing its potential to how to develop, implement and validate it.
  • Engaging comfortably at the edge of emerging technology, understanding their potential and anticipating developing trends.
  • Collaborating with teams of co-workers and partners — not just trying to do the work alone.

Your qualifications:

  • Demonstrated industry experience as a Creative Technologist, working with prototypes in different fidelity, from concept to high fidelity prototype.
  • Proven track record with Augmented Reality (mobile/head mounted) development and/or 3D game engine development (Unreal, Unity).
  • A history of working with technologies from within one or more of the following fields: IoT, Machine Learning (Deep Learning, GAN, etc.) and/or Spatial Computing beyond Augmented Reality (Virtual Reality, Spatial Audio, Embodied Interaction, etc.).
  • A compelling portfolio of work that demonstrates attention to detail and a focus on great design, aesthetics and user experience.
  • Familiarity with Figma, Canva, Miro or similar design and creative collaboration tools.
  • Excellence in communicating with and directing external partners.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional fluency in English.

What we offer:

A 1-year contract with 5 weeks' vacation, unlimited sick days and 5 paid days off per year. You’ll be provided an Apple computer, AirPods and an iPhone and phone plan. Every day, we share vegan lunch.

We encourage applicants from all over the world. We can assist with a work visa and relocation assistance (including moving expenses and language/cultural guidance). This position is for 1 year, but we are open to extending the contract for the right candidate. At this time, we cannot offer legal assistance for relocating spouses or children.

We support flexible work hours and remote working policies. We know there is no one ‘standard’ family structure and we actively try to make the best working arrangement for yours. We encourage everyone to bring their whole selves to work, respect a healthy work-life balance and value autonomous decision-making.
